By G.S.R. 706(E) dated 6 November 2024, the Chief Justice of India, exercising powers under clause (2) of Article 146 of the Constitution, amends the Supreme Court Officers and Servants (Conditions of Service and Conduct) Rules, 1961, with effect from 5 November 2024, by substituting the existing Category No. 46 (Chauffeur). For existing incumbents, the cadre is restructured into Senior Chauffeur (Category 46, 5% of cadre, requiring minimum 6 years as Chauffeur Grade-I or 16 years combined service), Chauffeur Grade-I (Category 46A, 35% of cadre, minimum 8 years as Chauffeur), and Chauffeur (Category 46B, 60% of cadre, direct recruitment). For future recruitment from 5 November 2024, the structure changes to Senior Chauffeur (14% of cadre, 5 years as Chauffeur Grade-I or 10 years combined service), Chauffeur Grade-I (21% of cadre, 5 years as Chauffeur or 10 years combined service as Chauffeur and Assistant Chauffeur), Chauffeur (27% of cadre, promotion from Assistant Chauffeur with 5 years' service), and a newly created Assistant Chauffeur category (38% of cadre, by direct recruitment). The qualification for all grades is a Class X standard examination and a valid light motor vehicle driving licence with knowledge of motor vehicle mechanism, recruited by promotion on seniority-cum-merit basis.
